Field Watches

If you are buying your first "real" watch and you are not sure what you want, a field watch is the safest possible answer. It is legible in a glance, it goes with anything, it survives being knocked about, and — because the design bar was set eighty years ago and never really needed changing — even the cheap ones look right. This is the rare category where a $50 Timex and a $700 Hamilton are recognizably the same kind of object.

So what does the extra money buy? Three things, in order of how much you'll notice them. First, the movement: a Timex Expedition is quartz, a Hamilton Khaki Field is a Swiss mechanical (hand-wound or automatic) with a display caseback and an 80-hour power reserve. Second, the crystal: acrylic or mineral on the budget end, sapphire further up, which is the single upgrade most worth paying for because it is the part that scratches. Third, finishing and lume quality — the parts you only notice up close.

Case size is where field watches quietly win. The historically correct diameter is around 36–40mm with short lugs, which is why a field watch fits a genuinely wide range of wrists where a chunky diver will not. The Hamilton Khaki Field is 38mm; several of our picks sit under 40mm. If you have been told your wrist is "too small for a watch," this is the category that proves otherwise.

The field watch is also the strap-swapper's favorite, because the whole aesthetic is built around fabric and leather. A single field watch and three straps — a NATO for the weekend, brown leather for the office, a green two-piece for the trail — is a complete watch "collection" for under the price of one mid-range diver.
