Lug & Leather exists because buying a watch is more confusing than it should be — and most of the advice out there is written by people who make more money when you spend more. This site is the independent, spec-driven, plainly honest alternative.

Why this site exists

The watch world runs on jargon and tribalism. Someone shopping for a first dive watch meets a wall of marketing copy, forum arguments, and "reviews" that are really sales pages in disguise. It is genuinely hard to tell a real 200m dive tool from a fashion watch wearing a bezel, or to know whether a 42mm case will actually fit your wrist. We built Lug & Leather to answer one question well: which watch — and which strap — should you actually buy, and why? In plain language, with the numbers shown.

What "independent" means here

We use that word carefully, because a lot of sites do not. We run no store, so we have nothing of our own to sell you. We accept no sponsored placements — no brand can pay to appear, to rank higher, or to soften a verdict. And we accept no free products, review units, or loaner watches, because the moment a company hands you a watch you are no longer a neutral party writing about it. We do not run a testing lab — and we say so

Here is the part most watch sites will not tell you: we have not personally handled every watch we write about, and we do not pretend to. There is no test lab here, no pressure tank, no drawer of loaner watches. Claiming otherwise would be the easiest lie on the internet and the hardest for you to check — so we do not tell it. What we do instead is concrete and reproducible. We compile the published manufacturer specifications, do the lug-to-lug wrist-fit math and the lug-width strap math ourselves, compare the numbers across brands, and cite every source. Who writes it

Stephen V. edits Lug & Leather, and the framing is deliberately modest: an enthusiast — someone genuinely interested in watches and the straps that fit them. Not a watchmaker, not a horologist, not a self-described veteran of anything. We could dress that up, but we think a fabricated background would be far worse than a modest true one. The second a bio overclaims, you should stop trusting everything around it. So the deal is simple: real interest, real research, real sources, and no invented credentials.

How it is funded

Running a site costs money, and we would rather tell you exactly how we cover it than pretend the content is free to make. Lug & Leather earns through the Amazon Associates program: when you buy something after clicking one of our links, Amazon pays us a small commission at no extra cost to you. That is the entire model. It funds the research; it does not steer it. We routinely rank a cheaper watch above a pricier one that would pay us more, because the alternative — quietly nudging you toward whatever pays best — is exactly the behavior this site was built to avoid.
