Prospex or Seiko 5? The one decision that matters
If you actually get the watch wet — swimming, snorkelling, hard outdoor use — buy a Prospex (Turtle or Samurai). They are certified to ISO 6425 with screw-down crowns and 200m ratings. If the watch mostly lives on your wrist at a desk and occasionally sees a pool, the Seiko 5 SRPD is the better-value everyday pick at 100m. Both use the same excellent 4R-series movements; the difference is the case's water sealing, not the mechanism.
The SKX question
Seiko discontinued the SKX007/009 — the watch that made this whole category — and the Seiko 5 Sports SRPD is its official replacement. It adds hacking (the seconds hand stops when you set the time) and hand-winding, two things the old SKX movement could not do. If you have been chasing an SKX on the used market, the SRPD is the new-in-box answer, and a better movement.
