The Best Chronograph Watches

A real working stopwatch on your wrist — the best chronographs for the money, ranked and priced live.

We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never affects our picks, and we say so when the cheaper watch is the better buy. How this works.

A chronograph is a stopwatch built into a watch: the pushers and sub-dials time an event, from a workout interval to a parking meter. It is the most broadly useful complication for the most people — and the one most often faked, with "multi-eye" dials whose sub-dials don't actually start and stop anything.

Every watch on this list is a real, working chronograph. We lean hard on solar and quartz here on purpose: a mechanical chronograph starts at many times these prices, while a Citizen Eco-Drive or Seiko solar chronograph does the identical job, keeps better time, and in the solar cases never needs a battery. The spec table shows what each one costs you in size and crystal.

Make sure it's a real chronograph

The test is simple: a real chronograph has pushers (usually at 2 and 4 o'clock) that start, stop and reset a timing function shown on the sub-dials. A watch with three sub-dials and no working pushers is a "multi-eye" date-and-day watch wearing chronograph styling. Every pick here is the genuine article.

Solar quartz is the smart buy

Unless you specifically want a mechanical movement, a solar chronograph is the sensible choice: the Citizen Brycen and Seiko Coutura Solar are light-powered, so they never need a battery change, and they keep far better time than any mechanical chronograph. The battery-quartz Seiko Coutura and Casio Edifice are excellent too — they just need a battery every few years. Save the mechanical chronograph for when the mechanism itself is the point.

How we picked

We do not run a testing lab

We compiled the published manufacturer specifications for every watch here — case size, lug-to-lug, lug width, water resistance, movement and crystal — did the wrist-fit and value math, and scored each pick against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — they are notmeasurements we took or wrist-time we logged, because we do not have these watches and we are not going to pretend we do. Where a spec could not be verified we wrote "data unavailable" rather than guessing.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best chronograph watch for the money?
The Citizen Eco-Drive Brycen is the value pick — a genuine working chronograph with a sapphire crystal on a solar movement that never needs a battery. The Seiko Coutura Solar is a strong alternative, and the Casio Edifice is the cheapest way into a solid steel chronograph.
How do I know if a chronograph is real?
A real chronograph has pushers (usually at 2 and 4 o'clock) that start, stop and reset a stopwatch shown on the sub-dials. If a watch has three sub-dials but no working pushers, it is a 'multi-eye' day-date watch styled to look like a chronograph, not a functioning one.
Should I buy a solar, quartz or mechanical chronograph?
For most people, solar quartz (Citizen Brycen, Seiko Coutura Solar) is the smart buy — accurate, and no battery changes ever. Battery quartz (Casio Edifice, Bulova) is cheaper up front but needs periodic service. Mechanical chronographs are the enthusiast's choice but cost many times more for no gain in timing accuracy.
